Traditional methods of magnetic particle collection involve the use of a magnetic field applied externally to the reaction vessel, and subsequent collection of the magnetic beads after they have been attracted to the side of the tube. Two or more wash steps are usually advised to remove any unwanted cells, nucleic acids, etc. that are collected non-specifically and improve target purity. Therefore, in addition to taking up valuable time and effort, traditional magnetic particle collection devices must exactly fit the reaction vessel used to ensure efficient separation.
To overcome these problems Bio-Nobile have designed the PickPen™ magnetic particle separation device. The PickPen contains a extendable/retractable magnetic tip which exerts it's magnetic attraction through a stretchable silicone rubber sheath. In the extended mode, the PickPen's magnet stretches the silicone sheath to create a thin membrane which separates the magnetic tip from the magnetic particles. The PickPen is then dipped into the suspension of magnetic beads bound to target cells, DNA, mRNA, etc. resulting in the magnetic particles collecting on the membrane covered magnetic tip. The beads may now be transferred into suitable wash buffer/nutrient media and released from the PickPen by retracting the tip. Wash steps may be performed as many times as required. The PickPen works optimally in volumes less than 1mL using magnetic particles greater than 1mm in diameter.

Fast magnetic particle separation
The PickPen brings the magnet to the magnetic particles rather than the magnetic particles to the magnet, significantly reducing the time required to collect magnetic particles in a suspension.
Flexible
The PickPen works best with low processing volumes (10mL to 1mL), hence in suitable for use with a wide variety of reaction vessels such as 96 well plates, 8 well strips, micro-centrifuge tubes and standard Eppendorf™ tubes commonly used in cell and molecular biology protocols. The PickPen is fully compatible with all magnetic particles greater than 1mm in size.
Simple
Staff can learn how to use the PickPen within a matter of minutes ensuring an immediate saving on technical laboratory time. The PickPen does not require calibration or settings and is simple to clean. The silicone tip sheaths are autoclavable and are resistant to most common chemicals. The PickPen has been designed to be comfortable to use and is lightweight.
